Saturday early afternoon and the line is out the door of Customs again - it's become a hang out for a few regulars, catching up in the sun outside, and a voyage of discovery for people who've been poking about on Cuba Street and ventured along Ghuznee Street. I don't find the place pretentious, even though you do need to be somewhat of a coffee enthusiast to want to choose your own brewing method and flavour experience. The staff are really friendly and helpful and despite having to tell customers over and over again that they don't do take-aways and how the place works they still engage with each person in a patient, knowledgeable and accessible way.
And the coffee - YUM! I just can't get enough of the velvet that comes out of their Slayer machine (espresso) and have a flat white or latte depending on the beans they're using on the day. I've also tried the other pour over methods and with some coaching, you really come to appreciate the distinct flavours of the single origin beans they have on offer. Beans are available for sale - Brazilian being the most popular.
You can get a little cookie or pastry to go with your coffee or a 'gourmet' toasted sandwich that's a step up from ham and cheese, being filled with things like bacon, brie and roasted tomato.
Ask the guys for a wi-fi password if you want to use the internet although if you're like me you'll end up being distracted by or get involved in conversations from music to coffee to New York!
Flat white: $3.50
